We expanded to Namatewa village in 2016 with support from the Whitley Fund for Nature.
Namatewa has a small community of just 400 people. Despite the small population, they have extensive natural resources. The village is located on the border of Selous Game Reserve which is one of the largest protected areas in the world at over 5.4 million hectares in size. One of two nationally recognised elephant corridors that links the Selous Ecosystem to the coast through Kilwa District also runs directly past Namatewa. Our work in the village will therefore make a valuable contribution towards the conservation of these charismatic animals.
Local people in Namatewa decided to set aside two village forest reserves for sustainable management, one is 8,683 hectares and one is 3,359 hectares.
